How come only muscle cars like "mustangs" can pull wheelies and high powered Ferrari's can't?
haha so anyone wnat to explain the science behind this? is it becuase ferrari has put some sort of computer to prevent this. what about the supra? It's a rear wheel drive it should be able to do a wheelie too right?
That fire truck isn't a fair example. They bounced the suspension and took advantage of the huge amount of weight over the rear axle due to the equipment.
The cars that can pull a wheelie are specially built drag cars. A wheelieing Mustang basically isn't even a Mustang anymore. It's been modified so heavially that it's no where near factory stock.
Ferraris don't pull wheelies off a line for the same reason that no stock muscle car will. I'll go on a short limb here and say that no production car (make sure you understand the term "production car") is able to pull a wheelie off a line. They're not made to and can't. They can't because they lack the two things needed. The power (torque) and the grip (traction).
Lets start with torque. What is torque? Torque is a measurement of rotational force. Basically, how hard can this thing turn? Unlike howsepower, which is a unit of work and therefore requires movement to create it, no movement is required to create torque. More on that in a second.
Take a R/C car. Pull the trigger/throttle and what happens? It moves forward. Why? because the engine/motor is trying to turn the tires and does so. As the tires turn they push the car forward. But what if the tires can't move?
Grab the R/C by the back tires and pull the trigger. What happens? The car will, if it has enough rotational force to lift the body, will flip backwards. But why? The tires are still moving in relation to the car's body. Take a powerful car and step on the gas. The front end will left up because either the front tires are pushing the back end down because of the torque or the back tires are trying to pull the front end up. But why doesn't the front end come up on a street car? What if it had enough torque to move the body if the tires are stuck like the R/C car? Because the tires aren't stuck enough because they lack the second componet. Traction.
Look at a drag car. The wheels are drag slicks. They're 4 or 5 times as wide as street tires are far far more "sticky." This gives them loads and loads of grip. So much grip that it's possible to make the tires "stuck in place" like when you hold the R/C car's with your hand. Now, if the tires can be "stuck" and the engine has enough torque to life the heavy front end up, then you'll get a wheelie.
But, you need the right conditions to pull a wheelie. You need a massive, non street legal engine built for torque and massive, non street legal tires to get the job done. The type of engine that is rebuilt often and tires that are good for a single day.
So, Ferraris can't pull a wheelie and neither can your neighbor's Mustang. Only cars that where built for a wheelie can. And I say that because any drag car that can pull a wheelie, but is meant to be a drag car will have wheelie bars to stop that from happening. If a car pulls a wheelie at a track that's because the owner is trying to show off.
